On Pulse, Community, and Pride

Scott K Smith

We, friends and I, spent the day at QUEER Care LA: Summer Edition. An altar was set up for community. People, faces, fairies gathered. We were greif, we were anger, we were the light of pride.

Original post appeared on Facebook, here.

What people outside of the queer community fail to realize and remember about us, liminal people, is that we have the powerful ability to take from grief and do something remarkable and life-affirming with it.

We as a tribe have survived a thousand years of persecution. No matter how any one man or culture has tried to smash us out, we still rise. Like bright and yellow, fierce, dandelion we sprout up beneath the boots that trample on us. We sprout up through the cracks in all the places anyone has tried to pave us over.

We are are the powerful Sacred Other.

The events this last night in Orlando are horrendous. It is the act of desperate, self-loathing people with access to weapons as agency to project that fear and self-hate onto others into terrible, awful acts of destruction.

I am angry.
I am full of grief.
This is Pride weekend.

If a bullet should enter my brain, let that bullet destroy every closet door.
— Harvey Milk

But I am proud too. I do not condone this or any act of violence, hate crime, or terrorism. No, I am not condoning. But they, do not know us and our queer, liminal power to continue on with such ferocity of love and pleasure in spite of their guns, their hate, their fear.

I am raising out magickal and loving arms, opening up my heart in this pain, and reaching out to community with a strength that speaks to me of our roots.

AIDS did not erase us.
Hate cannot erase us.
Homophobia will not erase us.
History will not erase us.
Religion will not erase us.
Politics will not cover us.
Normative culture will never absorb us into the wall flowers.

We are like Dandelion... Always pushing through the crack, the bright yellow on the lawn. The seeds the break apart in the wind, our words, our love, seeding in hearts and minds. We thrive.

I will with teary eyes remember more spiritual ancestors this day, the names of those (when published) will adorn my altar every pride. They will become a chant along side Harry Hay, James Baldwin, Assotto Saint, Langston Hughes, Virginia Woolf, Octavia Butler, Oscar Wilde, Patricia Highsmith, Jean Cocteau, Gore Vidal, Harvey Milk... So many names.

Sing them with me. Let it be anthem.

Comfort one another, and then through tears, through anger, with fierce pride pick up those flags, raise those heads high, stand out in the focus bared to the soul and show them love.

Since that time the names of the beautiful people who were gunned down have surfaced, let us add them to our altars, to our hearts, and hold them with a fierceness.
